Skills Overview
Extend your AI coding assistant with APIMatic know-how using APIMatic Skills.
APIMatic Skills are reusable instruction sets that teach your AI coding assistant how to work with the APIMatic CLI. Add a skill to Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex, and your agent can set up and customize a developer portal, or generate, customize, and publish APIMatic SDKs, by running the right commands and editing the right files for you.
APIMatic Skills follow the open Agent Skills specification. Each skill ships as a SKILL.md file, with reference files and helper scripts, that the agent loads automatically when it detects a matching task. The skills are open source at github.com/apimatic/skills.
Why use APIMatic Skills
- Guided setup. Describe what you want; the agent signs you in, scaffolds the project, runs the APIMatic CLI, and starts a local preview.
- No context switching. The agent knows the
apimatic.jsonsettings,nav.jsonrules, CLI flags, and common mistakes, so you don't have to look them up. - Safe defaults. The skills stop before risky actions, such as overwriting an existing SDK or publishing without an explicit request, and ask you first.
Available skills
| Skill | What it does | When to use |
|---|---|---|
apimatic-portal | Build, configure, preview, and host APIMatic developer portals | Creating or previewing a portal; configuring branding, header links, AI page actions, SDK languages, pages, nav.json and tabs; adding a Context Plugin page; hosting under a path; upgrading an older portal project |
apimatic-sdk | Generate, validate, and publish APIMatic SDKs in C#, Python, and TypeScript | Generating SDKs; validating or transforming the API definition; adding custom code safely; publishing to NuGet, PyPI, npm, or GitHub |
Prerequisites
- Node.js v24 or later, and npm
- An APIMatic account (sign up for free)
- The APIMatic CLI installed globally:
npm i -g @apimatic/cli@betaCheck the install:
apimatic --versionThe output should start with @apimatic/cli/2.. See Install the APIMatic CLI for details.
Install a skill
Pick whichever option fits your workflow.
Option 1: Install with the skills CLI (recommended)
The skills CLI installs an APIMatic skill into your agent's skills directory with one command:
npx skills add apimatic/skills --skill apimatic-portal
npx skills add apimatic/skills --skill apimatic-sdkOption 2: Ask your agent to install it
Paste this prompt into your agent:
I want to install the APIMatic skills from this GitHub repository:
https://github.com/apimatic/skills
Please do the following:
1. Clone or download the repository into a temporary directory. If you cannot do this, stop and let me know.
2. Copy each skill folder into the correct skills directory.
3. Confirm which skills were installed and where.
4. Clean up the temporary directory.Option 3: Copy the files manually
Clone the apimatic/skills repository, then copy the skill folders from skills/ into your agent's skills directory:
| Agent | Skills directory |
|---|---|
| Claude Code | .claude/skills/ |
| Codex | .agents/skills/ |
| Cursor | .agents/skills/ |
Use a skill
Once installed, the agent picks the right skill automatically based on your request. You don't need to invoke it. For example:
"Set up an APIMatic developer portal for the OpenAPI definition in ./spec.yaml."
The agent detects the apimatic-portal skill and guides you through signing in, scaffolding the project, and starting a local preview.
Skills for older projects
The skills on the main branch target the current APIMatic CLI, documented here. Projects built with the previous CLI (a src/APIMATIC-BUILD.json with no src/apimatic.json) use the previous skills on the repository's v1 branch:
npx skills add https://github.com/apimatic/skills/tree/v1/skills/apimatic-portal
npx skills add https://github.com/apimatic/skills/tree/v1/skills/apimatic-sdkYou can also use the current apimatic-portal skill to upgrade an older portal project. See What the skill does.
